The acting director of the Istitute of Geography Ramiz Mammadov, deputy director on science Elbrus Alizade and leading scientific-worker of the Department of Landscape Science and Landscape Planning Irina Kuchinskaya are invited to take part in the work of joint meeting of United Scientific Council on the Problems of Geography functioning at the International Association of Academics of Sciences and United Scientific Council on Fundamental Problems of Geography functioning at the Russian Academy of Sciences being held in Almati, Kazakhstan on September 9-13, 2013.

Joint report of R.Mammadov and E.Alizade titled “Geographical bases of revealing and warning of natural-destructive phenomena of Alp-Himalaya type mountain geosystems” is included the program of the Conference. I.Kuchinskaya will make a report titled as “Dynamics of change of the landscape-ecological conditions in the Major Caucasus”.

The scientific workers of the Department of Landscape Science and Landscape Planning, Doctors of Philosophy on Geography – Sitare Tarikhazar, Zernura  Hamidova and Samira Alekberova are invited to take part in the work of International Conference

1937 – Established the Geographic Sector in the structure of the Azerbaijan Branch of the USSR AS.

1945 – On May 1 organized the Institute of Geography of the Azerbaijan of Academy of Sciences.

1968 – K. Alekberov was elected a corresponding member of the AS of Azerbaijan SSR.

1971 – A.A. Madatzade, A.M. Shikhlinsky, A.J. Eyyubov for the first time was awarded the State Prize of the Republic for their monograph “Climate of Azerbaijan”.

1972 – Academician H.A. Aliyev was awarded the Medal named after N.I Vavilov.

1976 – A.J. Eyyubov was awarded the bronze medal in the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy of the USSR (EAME) for his map titled “Agroclimatic regioning of the Azerbaijan SSR” (Scale 1:600 000).

1976 – B.A. Budagov was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. 

1976-1987 – Academician B.A. Budagov was elected a member of Editorial Board of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia.

1977 – Director of Institute of Geography, academician H.A. Aliyev for merits in development of agro biology, preparation of the scientific staff and on the occasion of his 70-year anniversary was decorated with the Lenin Order.

1978 – B.A. Budagov for his monograph “Geomorphology of South-Eastern Caucasus and the latest tectonics” was decorated with the Golden Medal named after V.A. Przhevalsky of the Geographical Society of the USSR.

1978 – H.A. Aliyev, A.B. Mammadov, N.Sh. Shirinov were awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR for their map titled “Natural resources of Azerbaijan”.

1978 – A.M. Shikhlinsky, G.A. Hajiyev were decorated with the Silver and Bronze medals of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy of the USSR (EAME) for “Atlas of Thermal Balance of the Azerbaijan SSR”.

1979 – A.J. Eyyubov for his work titled “Classification of the climate of the Azerbaijan SSR” was decorated with the Golden medal named after F.P. Litke of the geographical Society of the AS of the USSR.

1979 – The scientists of the Institute – B.A. Budagov, B.A. Antonov, M.A. Museyibov and N.Sh. Shirinov were decorated with the Diploma of the geographical Society of the USSR for their works “Development history of the relief of Caucasus” (1977), “Regional geomorphology of Caucasus” (1979) and “Geomorphological map of Caucasus”.

1982 – Academician B.A. Budagov was awarded the Bronze medal of the EAME of the USSR for his photograph album ‘Nature of Azerbaijan”.

1989 – B.A. Budagov was elected a Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.

1993 – A.J. Eyyubov, Kh.Sh. Rahimov received the First Prize on natural sciences of the Education Society of the AzerbaijanRepublic for “Agroclimatic atlas of the AzerbaijanRepublic”.

1995 – Academician B.A. Budagov was awarded the Medal named after Y. Mammadaliyev for his services in education, progress of the natural sciences by the Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan Society of Enlightenment “Bilik”.

1977 - Academician B.A. Budagov was included in the commission on inquest of mass deportation of Azerbaijanians from their historical-ethnic land on the territory of the Armenian SSR in 1948-1953.

1999 – Corresponding member of the ANAS R.M. Mammadov was elected the President of the Ecological Centre for Southern Caucasus founded by the European Union.

2000 - Academician B.A. Budagov was elected the chairmen of the toponymy commission at the Milli Mejlis of the AR.

2001 - Academician B.A. Budagov was elected a member of the Coordination Council of world Azerbaijanians and a delegate of its I congress.

2001 – Collaborators of the Institute Doc.t.s. R.M. Mammadov, Doc.g.s. A.B. Mammadov., Doc.g.s. Sh.B. Khalilov was elected a corresponding member of the ANAS.

2003 - Academician B.A. Budagov was awarded the “Shohrat” Order on the degree of the President of the AzerbaijanRepublic for his services in development of geographical science and for his active participation in the social-political life of the republic.

2004 - Academician B.A. Budagov was appointed a member of Editorial Board of the Azerbaijan National Encyclopedia on the order of the President of the AR. 

Broadening the investigation of development regularities of geodynamic processes taking place in natural complexes of mountainous countries under the influence of natural-anthropogenic factors to create the systems of ecogeographical monitoring;

Estimating the level of ecogeographical risk of natural-destructive processes in the territory of republic to elaborate the scientific-theoretical and practice bases of landscape planning for the nearest future;

Continuation of the researches in new information scientific-inquiry system on the problems of desertification, which can exert influence on the development of economy;

Creation of different model variants of the global and regional climatic changes influence of anthropogenic factors on environment;

Investigation of the dynamics of relief development depending on endo- and exogenic processes;

Study of constant increasing influence on environment of the natural-destructive processes (mud streams, landslides, avalanches) and compiling of the maps of ecogeomorphological prognosis;

Working out the National Atlas of the Republic and electronic variants of geographical maps of different content in accordance with the demand of modern GIS.

In accordance with regulations of the Development Program of the Regions affirmed by President of the AR on the basis of social-economic development, labour resources and rational utilization of local natural resources of different regions to work out the scientific-practice suggestions and introduce them to executive organs;

Taking into account a great importance of the Caspian Sea in political-economic life of the country to continue its complex investigations, including to work out the model of prognosis of level changes of the sea, investigating the ecological changes taking place in coast and in sea, to compile a map of risk-prognosis of their influence on the Caspian Sea and coastal zone.

During more than sixty year activity of the Institute more than 30 scientific workers received the title of doctor of sciences and more than 260 persons – candidate of sciences. Within this period more than 290 collaborators were educated in the post-graduate studentship.

Hundred of teachers of higher schools of the republic took the refresher courses, assimilated the new directions of the geographical science.

The Azerbaijan geographical science was one of the most advanced schools in the territory of the former USSR. Taking into account of this point the Higher Examination Board of the USSR in 1962 established at the Institute of Geography a specialized Dissertation Council at which was defended the candidate and doctoral theses by the researches coming from the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cyprus, Germany.  The numbers of defended dissertation works are more than 60.

At the present the doctoral defenses is carried out at the Dissertation Council on four specialties of the geographical sciences.
