Salayeva Luiza Abdulla gyzy was born in 1948 in Baku city.

In 1970 she finished with honours the geographical faculty of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute named after V.I. Lenin.

Since 1971 she works at the Institute of Geography of the Azerbaijan AS.

In 1988 she was appointed a scientific secretary of the Institute of Geography named after acad. H.A. Aliyev, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

 The Institute of Geography named after Acad. H.A. Aliyev basing on the decree-“Classification of specialties on degree study of higher education” adopted by the cabinet of Ministry of the Azerbaijan Republic in March 15, 2012 gives ph. D. study education on the following spcialities:        

2508.01 – Geoecology

2529.01 – Cartography and geoinformatics – scientific direction united in itself the investigations on cartography and geoinformatics.

5401.01 – Economic geography – economic geography basing on the efficiency of geographical distribution of labors studies the territorial organization of the productive forces of society in global, regional, state, area and local scales.

5402.01 - Historical geography, political and recreational geography – taking into account of the rest, labors and everyday life, development of personality, life activity of a man, secondary production and exploitation of environment in different historical and social conditions, study space peculiarities of life-activity of a man, forms of territorial organization of tourism and recreation. The political geography studies geographical structures and formation of political map of the world, space organization of political life within the regions and certain countries and its interrelation with distribution and territorial accordance of political forces. The main problems standing in the front of historical geography, political and recreational geography are formation of their theoretical bases, regularities of territorial organization of historical-geographical processes and social infrastructures, suggestions of practice recommendations on forecasting of map of the world.

5402.01 – Human geography – being one of the sections of economic geography studies geographical regularities of the distribution of population and settlements, demographic development, age, sexual, national-ethnic composition of population, structure of settling systems of different natural, historical, social-economic conditions.

5404.01 – Regional geography – is a complex science, systematizing a detailed information on the countries, their different regions, at the same time, about their nature, geographical position, population, economy, culture and social-political organization. The study object of the regional geography is the investigation of formation of its theoretical bases, grounds of rational territorial organization in regional and local scales and suggestions of practice recommendations in this sphere as well.

5405.01 – Atmosphere – scientific discipline uniting in itself the investigations on physics of atmosphere, meteorology, climatology.

5406.01 – Hydrology – a scientific discipline, studying the water objects of the land, processes taking place in them, distribution regularities of river flow in time and space, quality of waters.

5407.01 – Oceanology – a complex sciences, studying the physical, chemical, biological and other processes going on in the world ocean, taking account of astronomic and anthropogenic factors and their relations with atmospheric and lithospheric processes.

5408.01 – Physical geography and biogeography, soil geography, geophysics and geochemistry of landscapes – a scientific direction studying the inside structure, formation, evolution and mechanism of activity of landscape sphere of the Earth and its different component parts (soil and vegetation covers, animal world, climate, relief, surface waters, geological structure and so on).

5409.01 – Geomorphology – a scientific discipline uniting in itself the researches on geomorphology and evolutional geography.

5410.01 – Glaciology and cryology – a scientific discipline studying the different types of glaciation – glaciers, underground ices, snow covers, snow-slip, marine and river ices and formation of ice in total as well, studies the genesis, distribution and evolution of cryosphere of the Earth as a whole.

5411.01 – Meteorology – a scientific discipline uniting in itself the researches on meteorology, climatology, agrometeorology.

During more than sixty year activity of the Institute more than 30 scientific workers received the title of doctor of sciences and more than 260 persons – candidate of sciences. Within this period more than 290 collaborators were educated in the post-graduate studentship.

Hundred of teachers of higher schools of the republic took the refresher courses, assimilated the new directions of the geographical science.

The Azerbaijan geographical science was one of the most advanced schools in the territory of the former USSR. Taking into account of this point the Higher Examination Board of the USSR in 1962 established at the Institute of Geography a specialized Dissertation Council at which was defended the candidate and doctoral theses by the researches coming from the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cyprus, Germany.  The numbers of defended dissertation works are more than 60.

At the present the doctoral defenses is carried out at the Dissertation Council on four specialties of the geographical sciences.

1937 – Established the Geographic Sector in the structure of the Azerbaijan Branch of the USSR AS.

1945 – On May 1 organized the Institute of Geography of the Azerbaijan of Academy of Sciences.

1968 – K. Alekberov was elected a corresponding member of the AS of Azerbaijan SSR.

1971 – A.A. Madatzade, A.M. Shikhlinsky, A.J. Eyyubov for the first time was awarded the State Prize of the Republic for their monograph “Climate of Azerbaijan”.

1972 – Academician H.A. Aliyev was awarded the Medal named after N.I Vavilov.

1976 – A.J. Eyyubov was awarded the bronze medal in the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy of the USSR (EAME) for his map titled “Agroclimatic regioning of the Azerbaijan SSR” (Scale 1:600 000).

1976 – B.A. Budagov was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. 

1976-1987 – Academician B.A. Budagov was elected a member of Editorial Board of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia.

1977 – Director of Institute of Geography, academician H.A. Aliyev for merits in development of agro biology, preparation of the scientific staff and on the occasion of his 70-year anniversary was decorated with the Lenin Order.

1978 – B.A. Budagov for his monograph “Geomorphology of South-Eastern Caucasus and the latest tectonics” was decorated with the Golden Medal named after V.A. Przhevalsky of the Geographical Society of the USSR.

1978 – H.A. Aliyev, A.B. Mammadov, N.Sh. Shirinov were awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR for their map titled “Natural resources of Azerbaijan”.

1978 – A.M. Shikhlinsky, G.A. Hajiyev were decorated with the Silver and Bronze medals of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy of the USSR (EAME) for “Atlas of Thermal Balance of the Azerbaijan SSR”.

1979 – A.J. Eyyubov for his work titled “Classification of the climate of the Azerbaijan SSR” was decorated with the Golden medal named after F.P. Litke of the geographical Society of the AS of the USSR.

1979 – The scientists of the Institute – B.A. Budagov, B.A. Antonov, M.A. Museyibov and N.Sh. Shirinov were decorated with the Diploma of the geographical Society of the USSR for their works “Development history of the relief of Caucasus” (1977), “Regional geomorphology of Caucasus” (1979) and “Geomorphological map of Caucasus”.

1982 – Academician B.A. Budagov was awarded the Bronze medal of the EAME of the USSR for his photograph album ‘Nature of Azerbaijan”.

1989 – B.A. Budagov was elected a Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.

1993 – A.J. Eyyubov, Kh.Sh. Rahimov received the First Prize on natural sciences of the Education Society of the AzerbaijanRepublic for “Agroclimatic atlas of the AzerbaijanRepublic”.

1995 – Academician B.A. Budagov was awarded the Medal named after Y. Mammadaliyev for his services in education, progress of the natural sciences by the Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan Society of Enlightenment “Bilik”.

1977 - Academician B.A. Budagov was included in the commission on inquest of mass deportation of Azerbaijanians from their historical-ethnic land on the territory of the Armenian SSR in 1948-1953.

1999 – Corresponding member of the ANAS R.M. Mammadov was elected the President of the Ecological Centre for Southern Caucasus founded by the European Union.

2000 - Academician B.A. Budagov was elected the chairmen of the toponymy commission at the Milli Mejlis of the AR.

2001 - Academician B.A. Budagov was elected a member of the Coordination Council of world Azerbaijanians and a delegate of its I congress.

2001 – Collaborators of the Institute Doc.t.s. R.M. Mammadov, Doc.g.s. A.B. Mammadov., Doc.g.s. Sh.B. Khalilov was elected a corresponding member of the ANAS.

2003 - Academician B.A. Budagov was awarded the “Shohrat” Order on the degree of the President of the AzerbaijanRepublic for his services in development of geographical science and for his active participation in the social-political life of the republic.

2004 - Academician B.A. Budagov was appointed a member of Editorial Board of the Azerbaijan National Encyclopedia on the order of the President of the AR.

Continuation of the researches in new information scientific-inquiry system on the problems of desertification, which can exert influence on the development of economy;

Investigation of the dynamics of relief development depending on endo- and exogenic processes;

Study of constant increasing influence on environment of the natural-destructive processes (mud streams, landslides, avalanches) and compiling of the maps of ecogeomorphological prognosis;

Working out the National Atlas of the Republic and electronic variants of geographical maps of different content in accordance with the demand of modern GIS.

In accordance with regulations of the Development Program of the Regions affirmed by President of the AR on the basis of social-economic development, labour resources and rational utilization of local natural resources of different regions to work out the scientific-practice suggestions and introduce them to executive organs;

MAIN SCIENTIFIC DIRECTIONS OF RESEARCHES

After obtaining the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan the Institute of Geography accepted priority decisions concerned two important problems.

1. Regularity the development of nature of Azerbaijan; study of natural resources and their ecogeographical peculiarities; problems of production, social infrastructure and economic and geographical problems of territorial organization of population; constructive and regional problems of the republic; desertification processes.
2. Factors causing the level changing of the Caspian Sea and study of its ecological conditions.

For solving there two complex problems the basic direction of scientific activity of the Institute are given below: complex study of regularities the formation, stability and changeability of geographical cover and development in regional scale; reconstruction of natural conditions of past geological periods; estimation of geomorphologic construction of the territory as one of the resourceformig factors; landscape evolution; genesis of climate and its forecasting; methods of struggle with desertification; rational utilization of natural resources; regional forecasting the changes of environment under the influence of global and anthropogenic factors; settling of population of Azerbaijan and territorial organization of production; hydrometeorological conditions of the Caspian Sea; ecogeographical problems.

The scientific-research works are carried out on the study of development of natural, economical and social-geographical processes, their interrelations; regularities the distribution of natural resources, ways of their rational utilization.

A number of scientific problems on the study of biospheric, atmospheric, marine natural resources in the territory of republic, their rational utilization and protection of environment are worked out.

The basic researches on the forecasting of climate, study o hydrometeorological processes, landscape science, geomorphology, palaeogeography, neotectonics, biogeography and Caspian Sea are being continued.

In connection with arising a peculiar need in rational utilization of natural resources of the country after gaining independence the scientific geographical researches carried out at the Institute mainly bear applied character. From this point of view the publication of three-volume monograph titled “Constructive geography of the AzerbaijanRepublic” has an especial importance.

It already five year that the Institute of geography in addition to the plan carries out a scientific-applied work on the theme: “Regional geographical problems of the AzerbaijanRepublic”. In connection with the decree issued by the President of Republic (2004) on the development of regions this theme obtains a greater significance. The elaboration of long-term prognosis the level changes of the Caspian Sea, applied geomorphology, desertification, ecogeography are the most actual research themes. In restoration of the panorama of Baku and reconstruction of Baku Seaside boulevard declared as the National Park were used the data of long-term level forecasting of the Caspian Sea worked out by the collaborators of the Institute of Geography.

The basic scientific researches have been always gained an advantage in mount scientific results were included in the annual report of the NASA.

In 1937 basing on the order of the Central Committee of Azerbaijan dated 1925 and titled “On the study of natural resources of republic and regioning” was organized a sector of Geography in the structure of Azerbaijan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and by this was laid the foundation of Azerbaijan geographical school, always occupying a particular place in the scientific sphere of the former USSR.

By formation of the given sector the geographical science completed its descriptive function and begins systematic geographical researches in Azerbaijan.

Under the leadership of such great scholars as I.V. Figurovsky, H.A. Aliyev, R.B. Kovalyev and H.B. Aliyev during its eight years activity the researches on physical and economical, soil geography, cartography, seismology and astronomy were carried out in the sector.

In 1945 may 1 on the basis of given sector the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR was organized which H.B. Aliyev director was appointed.

During 60 years activity the Institute, beside H.B. Aliyev, was directed by A.M. Shikhlinsky (1948-1951), A.A. Madatzade (1951-1957), G.K. Gul (1957-1964), S.H. Rustamov (1964-1967), H.A. Aliyev (1967-1988) and B.A. Budagov (1988-2012).

Since July 1945 the departments of physical and economical geography, cartography began to function at the Institute. One of the main themes of researched becomes the geography of mountainous countries.

In spite of that the initial years there was not a single of workers with scientific degree, in 1947 11 workers out of 20 were already candidate of science, and 3 joined the postgraduate studentship.

Taking into account of universality the objects and themes of geographical researches in 1950 the personnel potential in the structure of Institute consisted of 6 departments.

Since 1959 the Centre of Problems of the Caspian Sea has been functioning at the Institute of Geography.
