HISTORY

The Department of “Hydrology of Land and Water Resources” was formed in 1953.

From the first year of its foundation up to 1985 the department was headed by distinguished scientist-hydrologist, doctor of geography, Professor Rustamov Saleh Haji oghlu.

Within the 1952-1956 under his leadership and direct his participation was studied the geographical peculiarities of all rivers of Azerbaijan, found their attraction in the four volumed monographs. Later on, studying the regularity of formation water flow and sediment, their distribution according to the time and space, on the basis of complex peculiarities of them was given the division into regions of the territory of Azerbaijan.

Since 1963 together with candidate of geographical sciences R.M. Gashgay he was carried out the researches on water balance and water resources of the republic.

From 1986 the head of department is doctor of geographical sciences R.M. Gashgay.

Since 2009 the department is named “Hydrology of Land and Water Resources”.

 

DIRECTIONS OF RESEARCHES AND THEMES

 The basic direction - surface waters, study of the formation and passing of water flows and sediments in different physic-geographical conditions, determination of water balance and water resources, revealing the influence of economical activities on river flows, study of hydrodynamic peculiarities of the formation of floods and mud streams, resources conservation and protection of water resources.

Studies of lakes and reservoirs, estimation of chemical and ion flow of the rivers.

 

MAIN SCIENTIFIC RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Studied the regularities of formation and passing of mountain river flows, suggested the methods of determination of underground flow of the rivers for unstudied rivers and compiled a map of their element.

On the basis of their was obtained the interrelation of elements of water balance for mountainous countries for the first time, determined the water resources of landscape belts, river basins and all republic as a whole.

It was determined that the transit flow of water resources of Azerbaijan consist of 30,9 km³, but local – 10,3 km³, suggested the methods for determination of summer natural regulation of flow.

Studied the influence of economical activities on river flows and ecological state of the lower parts of watersheds, determined that the water resources did not decrease, but took place their distribution on the territory.

Studied the peculiarity of formation of solid flow and suspended sediments and suggested the methods of their calculation.

For the first time it was determined that in connection with changes of ecological conditions of the territory of Lenkaran natural region and increasing of middle layer of wash off from surface of watersheds takes place the intensification of desertification processes.

Worked out the methods of calculation of ion flow, biogenic and organic elements, given the estimation of intensity of chemical denudation and carried out the classification of waters according to their content.

Studied the hydrological peculiarities of lakes and reservoirs and their becoming silted.      

 Now employees of a department continue work on researches of influence of the anthropogenous factor on a drain of the rivers and ecological conditions of their reservoirs.

Basic scientific achievements: researched the agroclimatic conditions and resources of the cultivation of main long-term crops revealing the influence of meteorological conditions on quantity and quality of harvest, carried out the agroclimatic division into regions of these crops; carried out the long-term researches of microclimate, radiation and thermal balances of long-term plantations, researched the influence of way of planting and moulding of vegetation crones on their forming and quantity and quality of harvest as well; carried out the climatic-land-reclamation division into districts of the territory of Azerbaijan and compiled a zoning map on the basis of worked out zoning system; distinguished the regions, subregions, districts and subdistricts with precise agroclimatic features of marked out  subdivision; investigated the possible influence of expected changes of climate on agroclimatic resources, borders of natural zones, natural and agroecosystems, man’s health and worked out the measures of adaptation to them.

Hassanov Maharram Samed oghlu – 1954, 25.00.30 – “Meteorology, climatology and agrometeorology”, associate professor, candidate of geographical sciences, leading scientific worker.

Basic scientific achievements: studied the dependence of growth, development, productivity and quality of harvest of winter wheat on relief, exposition of slopes and meteorological elements; worked out the recommendation for determination of direction the utilization of cereals in connection with its quality.

Published a number of phonological maps of winter wheat in the “Agroclimatic atlas of Azerbaijan”. One of the main authors of “Agroclimatic map of the natural regions of Azerbaijan” (scale 1:300 000). Took part in the researches on the estimation of resources of wind energy and natural moistening of the territory of republic on the background of global climatic changes.

At present he takes part in the research of “Estimation the influence of expected climatic changes on agroclimatic resources of Azerbaijan”.

Hadiyev Yusif Jahangir oghlu – 1957, 25.00.30 – “Meteorology, climatology and agrometeorology”, candidate of geographical sciences, leading scientific worker.

Basic scientific achievements: researched the long-term changes of annual and seasonal values of air temperatures and atmospheric precipitations in the territory of the Azerbaijan Republic. It was determined that within 1881-2000 air temperature increased, but atmospheric precipitations, except the large cities, decreased. Calculated the speed of growth and decrease of these elements.

The scenario of coming changes of these parameters up to 2030 was given.

Basic scientific achievements: studied the synoptic processes in which probability of the falling of plentiful and intensive precipitations increases, determined the relation between the macrocirculating processes over Europe and mud stream forming in Eastern Transcaucasia, revealed some predictions of forecasting of mud streams.

HISTORY

Doctor of geographical sciences, Corresponding member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, the State prize laureate, prof. E.M. Shikhlinsky became the head of Department of Climatology from the first of foundation of the Institute of Geography, Azerbaijan AS.

The department and its subdivisions were headed by the following distinguished scientists in different years: Doctor of geographical sciences, the State prize laureate, prof. A.M. Madatzade; Doctor of geographical sciences, the State prize laureate, prof. A.J. Eyyubov; candidate of geographical sciences G.A. Hadjiev; candidate of phys.-math. sciences A.M. Mammadov; candidate of geographical sciences M.S. Hasanov; candidate of geographical sciences Y.J. Gadiyev.

At present the department is functioning under the name of Department of “Climatology and Agroclimatology”.

 

 THE BASIC DIRECTIONS OF RESEARCHES AND THEMES

 In different periods the main directions of activities of the department were: climatology of separate elements, synoptic climatology of thermal and radiation balances, complex climatology, agroclimatology, resort and medicinal climatology, microclimatology and zooclimatology.

At present the main attention is given to the questions of climatic change and adaptation to it, agroclimatology and medicinal climatology.

 

MAIN SCIENTIFIC RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

 The following research works have been carried out in the department: Methods of calculation of radiation and thermal balances was worked out, genesis of climate was studied and significant results on climatic change was obtained, estimation of its possible aftereffects in the territory of country was given and measures of adaptation to it were worked out; causes of rise of dangerous weather phenomena were determined, methods of prognosis of extreme seasons, months, decades was improved; estimation of agroclimatic resources was studied and given, regions with different bioclimatic potential were distinguished, methods of compiling of agroclimatic maps and atlases of mountainous country on the pattern of territory of Azerbaijan was worked out; microclimatic, radiation and thermal balances of fields and gardens of main agricultural plants, at the same time a number of towns of the country were studied; system was worked out and climatic-meliorative division into regions of the territory of country was carried out; possibility of climatic-medical treatment in the resorts of country was studied and climatic-landscape division into regions for recreation purposes was carried out.
